SHIATSU 指圧 Japanese Holistic Therapy
Shiatsu is a highly effective and enjoyable physical therapy that originated in Japan, and is rooted in Oriental Medicine. It can be beneficial both for specific conditions and as preventative healthcare.
What's a Shiatsu treatment like?
Treatment includes stretches, gentle manipulation of the joints, and soft but deep pressure on the meridians (energy channels that run along the body), mostly using the palms and thumbs, to release energy blockages and re-establish the optimal flow of “Ki/Qi/Chi” (vital energy/force). The intention of this holistic massage therapy is to bring out the natural self-healing ability that we all posses by nature. Treatment takes place fully clothed.
Why would I have Shiatsu?
Some people come to shiatsu for help with a specific symptom or condition. Others choose to have treatment to help maintain good health, as a preventive measure, or simply to improve their general sense of wellbeing. Because it aims to treat the whole person rather than specific symptoms in isolation, it can be effective for a range of conditions. We treat the person, not just the condition they have, so each client’s treatment plan will be different. However, you can always ask us about other clients’ experiences, to give you an idea of what to expect. Many people return to shiatsu again and again because they find it so beneficial and relaxing.
History of Shiatsu
From prehistoric times, various hands-on therapeutic methods have been practiced in Japan. The origin was a method called 手当て Te-ate, meaning "hands application", which was widely practiced among the general population and developed alongside 按摩 An-ma (massage based on Chinese Medicine) and 導引 Dou-in (a form of Qigong physical and breathing exercises) that were introduced from China in the 3rd century. These massage therapies were later integrated with Chiropractic and Osteopathy, which were imported from America in the late 19th century. The term 指 (shi) 圧 (atsu), meaning "fingers pressure", has become widely known since the 1940's. Shiatsu has become popular as an alternative massage therapy in the Western countries over recent decades.

Testimonial
"I went for my first shiatsu session with Junko after a ski accident where I injured my knee. After a few shiatsu sessions I could already feel my overall body condition getting much better. It really helped speed up my recovery but it also helped me find balance in my body and has astounding effect on my sleep, being a chronic insomniac. I now come to Junko for any health concerns, from hormonal imbalance to a simple neck pain and combine my sessions with one of her signature facials which have had amazing results on my skin. It helps my skin detox from city life but also works wonders on complexion and fine lines by relaxing the muscles and giving a boost of hydration to tired skin. On top of being an incredibly relaxing experience, it gives you a chance to disconnect from busy life and has a great effect on your health where sometimes modern medicine has its limits. I highly recommend Junko and her shiatsu technique!" (MM, 33, Female)
